The spy technique

Quarterbacks are becoming more athletic and mobile. This creates a big problem for defenses who want to be aggressive, but still want to contain the quarterback.

One way to do this is to use the spy technique. The spy technique puts one of the line of scrimmage players 1-on-1 with the QB.

This allows the lineman who are rushing to be aggressive and not worry about containment because one player is exclusively assigned to the QB. Today I will be breaking down how to execute a perfect spy technique.

Rusher responsibilities

The great part of the spy technique is that it gives the other rushers flexibility to do whatever they want. To be clear, every rusher except the spy has a 2 way go.

Entertain the blocker

The spy needs to give time for the other rushers to beat their man. So, he needs to attack his man as if he is rushing.

Drop shallow w/ eyes on the QB

The spy's responsibility is the QB so he needs to put himself in proper position to prevent the QB from scrambling. A shallow drop will allow the spy to avoid blockers and have vision on the QB.

Shoot large gaps

If a large gap opens the spy needs to shoot the gap to make sure the QB doesn't have anywhere to scramble
