Run stunt fundamentals
Pete Jenkins defines run stunts as line movements designed to alter gap responsibility on the move.
These stunts can be extremely useful for stopping the run, confusing blocking schemes and complimenting your base defense, but if your D-Line doesn't understand the fundamentals, these stunts will open huge gaps in your defense.
To avoid this, here's a few tips on how to run these stunts the right way.
Fundamentals
For all types of stunts make sure to....
Keep eyes and alignment consistent
Avoid contact on your 1st step
Get vertical on your 2nd step
Rip the backside arm
For 1-gap movement...
Transfer your eyes from the primary blocker to the adjacent blocker so you can “fight the face” if blocker bases or “chase the tail” if blocker down blocks
1-gap drill work
Here’s a drill to practice “fighting face” by transferring eyes, shooting hands and stepping at an angle.
For 2-gap movement...
“Cross face” if the blocker comes to you and “chase the tail” if the blocker blocks away.
2-gap drill work
Here’s a drill to practice this by long sticking, reading the block and reacting.
