Mastering 1 and 2-gap stance
The foundation
Stance is foundational to destroying blocks. A good stance sets you up to explode out with power and properly react to any block. Below, I've detailed what exactly you need to concentrate on when in a stunt, 1-gap and 2-gap stance.
Attack react stance
When playing a 1-gap technique (1, 3 or 5) use an attack and react stance. For this stance, have inside hand down with inside foot back, eyes up, on balls of feet, hand just in front of the forehead and off arm dangling. This gives you the ability to get off with violence while being able to move in lock step with your opponent.
Read attack stance
When playing a 2-gap technique (0, 2 or 4) use a read attack stance. For this stance, keep everything the same as you would an attack and react stance, but keep your feet balanced so you can move left or right with ease.
Stunt stance
And finally when stunting, tighten your base with your mental weight on your push foot. This gives you the ability to take a long lateral step without tipping off your opponent.
Individualize stance
Every player has a unique body so the stance of each player should also be unique.
Let's take a look at first round draft pick Kwity Paye's stance as an example.
Kwity here has an irregular stance with both hands down and knee low to the ground, but if you look at his explosion off the ball his stance generates more than enough force.
So if your players are struggling with their stance adjust it so it's comfortable for them. No stance is one size fits all.
Hope you enjoyed it!
