How Tyler Shelvin attacks and reacts
Tyler Shelvin is predicted to go 1st round for the 2021 draft. And no wonder. The guy is 360 pounds and moves like a running back. What's most impressive is his violence off the ball.
Tyler generates force off the ball with a technique called attack and react. This technique was coined by the great Coach Pete Jenkins. He talked about it this way...
But firing hips is not the only key to getting great knock back. Here are a few other tips on how to execute an attack and react from a 1 technique...
Come out them hips
The hips are the power center of the body. Uncoil the hips to generate force quickly off the ball.
Hand placement
Hands inside with thumbs up gives you full control of the blocker to shed once you get extension.
Full extension
The key here is to create separation between you and the blocker so he can't hold you.
Look around the block not over it
Young players make the mistake of looking over the blocker and raising their pad level. Instead look around by keeping your nose on the blockers ear whole.
A final word
If repetition is the mother of learning, you must drill often and repeatedly to master a technique. For example, you can use the pop and peak drill to practice looking around and not over.
