When I started writing D-Line Examples I thought there was just one way to defeat double...Man was I wrong.
After talking with a ton of coaches on how to defeat this difficult block, I found out that there are not one, not two, but three different ways to defeat double.
And rather than keep it to myself, I thought why not share it with the D-Line Examples community.
So for this week's DLE I'll be detailing the 3 ways to defeat double. Check it out below.
Stay square
The first way to defeat double is to "stay square".
This technique will give your opponent the impression that he has done his job. Because of this he'll work up to the linebacker and come off of you.
That's when you can pop back in your gap and make the play.
Get skinny
The second way is to "get skinny" and wedge your body between the two doublers.
To do this remember to shock the post, plant your foot, wedge your hip and throw off when pressure leaves.
Shoulder yank
The last way to defeat double is to "shoulder yank" and sneak yourself between the doublers.
To execute this technique simply shock the post and yank the primary blocker's shoulder down when you feel pressure from the adjacent blocker.
This technique is especially helpful for undersized D-Linemen who have trouble fighting force with force.
When to use?
Stay square: Use if the adjacent blocker wants to quickly get to the linebacker
Get skinny: Use if you have a strong D-Line that can fight force with force
Shoulder yank: Use if you have an undersized D-Line
That's all for this week folks. Hope you all have a happy holiday and if you're forwarding this to a friend, they can sign up to get D-Line Examples every week here.
